Bravus Mining and Resources’ environmental management and Indigenous engagement programs at its Carmichael mine have been recognised by the 2023 Australian Mining Prospect Awards.

The Australian Mining Prospect Awards is one the most respected Australian industry awards for the country’s mining and minerals processing sector.

Bravus is a finalist to win the Excellence in Environmental Management and Sustainability award for its AI (artificial intelligence) supported monitoring of the endangered Black-throated Finch.

Bravus is also a finalist to win the Indigenous and Community Engagement award for its collaboration with Woongal Environmental Services, a Wangan and Jagalingou Traditional Owner business. The partnership concerned the ecological management of the 33,000-hectare conservation area that surrounds the Carmichael mine.

“The Carmichael mine has some of the strictest environmental conditions of any resources project in Australia’s history,” Bravus Mining and Resources head of community, communications and ESG (environmental, social and governance) Kate Campbell said.

“That means we also have some of the best environmental monitoring and scientific research programs in the world, especially in the areas of groundwater and species management.

“Being a finalist in these awards is due recognition of the outstanding work our talented environmental teams and their research and Traditional Owner partners do at Carmichael to ensure we continue to operate in a way that is responsible, sustainable, and protects the environment and our neighbours.”

The Carmichael mine produces 10 million tonnes of coal per annum, and is located more than 300km inland from Queensland’s east coast and 160km northwest of Clermont in regional Queensland.

The 20th Australian Mining Prospect Awards will be held on November 9 in Brisbane.
