New scientific study reveals how welding fume product controls compare

An Australian study has compared the effectiveness of different product control methods in reducing exposure to welding fume.

The methods analysed were:

  • on-gun fume extraction (LEV)
  • hooded capture extraction (LEV)
  • welding helmet with a powered air purifying respirator (PPE)

The scientific study was published in the Safety Journal in 2023.

Previous studies have done an effective job in defining the dangers of welding fume exposure; however, few have been able to identify and compare the relative effectiveness of available welding fume product control solutions.

AWS has now released a whitepaper, The Effectiveness of Welding Fume Product Controls, which based on the results of the recent Australian scientific study. This whitepaper discusses the results and then provides clear and practical guidance on how best to control welding fume. The paper also gives the reader access to a new, online, and free welding fume product control selector.
