Sandvik provides safer drilling training

Sandvik virtual training

Sandvik has introduced two new virtual training solutions for underground drills operations.

The training simulators are part of Sandvik’s Digital Driller program aiming to offer an authentic, safer learning environment for operator training across all underground hard rock drilling applications.

The new Sandvik DD322i and Sandvik DD422i dual controls simulators feature the latest software and advanced training methods for underground drill operators and maintenance teams.

The virtual training environment means operators can be trained on site with zero damage to equipment or the mine environment, and no impact on machine availability.

“With the addition of the DD322i and DD422i Dual Controls models, we’re enabling even more comprehensive operator training,” Sandvik underground drilling training academy manager Tiia Pohjanlehto said.

“We can tangibly improve efficiency, productivity and safety, as operators can be trained before the drill rig arrives on site or during rig maintenance.”

Operators can experience multitasking operations from a single control panel, including bolting, boring and meshing.

The Digital Driller program can be utilised across all competency levels, from product familiarisation and basic training for novice operators, to developing and refreshing the skills of experienced operators.

Trained operators receive a formal qualification in ‘beginner’, ‘professional’ or ‘drill master’ levels after each module has been completed.

Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions was chosen in early September to replace Theiss Group subsidiary MACA’s mixed surface fleet at the Gruyere open-pit gold mine in the WA Goldfields.

The replacement rigs include include six Sandvik DR410i rotary blasthole drills, two Leopard DI650i down-the-hole drill rigs and a Pantera DP1500i top hammer drill rig.

Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions is a business area within the Sandvik Group, a global supplier of equipment and tools, parts, service, digital solutions and sustainability-driving technologies for the mining and construction industries.
